"Although headache is such a common symptom, it is not always easy to diagnose, even for experienced neurologists. Or the treatment of a headache does not - or no longer - bring the desired success. These are then reasons why the neurologist or pain therapist refers the patient to us in the special outpatient clinic," says PD Dr. Stefanie Förderreuther, Head of the Neurological Consultation Service and the Headache Outpatient Clinic at the LMU Inner City Clinic.
Common clinical pictures that give rise to a presentation in the special outpatient clinic include cluster headaches, migraines, headaches caused by overuse of painkillers and chronic tension headaches. The headache outpatient clinic also specializes in facial pain that is difficult to treat, such as trigeminal neuralgia. "Ultimately, however, we deal with all forms of the now more than 250 known types of headache and facial pain," says PD Dr. Förderreuther.
At the end of the year, the headache outpatient clinic moved from the Großhadern campus to the city center - the treatment concept has remained the same: "In addition to (further) diagnostics and differential diagnostics, the focus of the headache outpatient clinic at our new location is primarily on therapeutic advice and treatment recommendations, for example for effective acute treatment or for individual headache prophylaxis," explains PD Dr. Förderreuther.
