LMU Radiology Receives First EU-Wide Certification for the Safe and Quality-Assured Use of AI in Imaging
The Department of Radiology at LMU University Hospital Munich Joins an International Network of Excellence
The Department of Radiology at LMU University Hospital Munich is the first institution in the European Union to receive the “ACR Recognized Center for Healthcare-AI” (ARCH-AI) designation from the American College of Radiology. This certification confirms the safe and quality-assured use of artificial intelligence (AI) in medical imaging. As a result, the Department of Radiology at LMU University Hospital Munich becomes part of an international network of leading university hospitals that is advancing quality and performance standards for clinical AI.

The Department of Radiology at LMU University Hospital Munich has been recognized as part of an international network of leading university hospitals that is advancing quality and performance standards for clinical AI.
At the Department of Radiology at LMU University Hospital Munich, AI has been supporting the interpretation of numerous imaging studies for years, ranging from X-rays and mammograms to CT and MRI scans.
CE-certified AI algorithms have become an integral part of everyday clinical practice. For example, they are used to detect fractures, to segment, quantify, and characterize lesions, and to measure disease-related changes over time. AI-based applications support the analysis of image data and can help identify relevant findings more quickly.

"ACR Recognized Center for Healthcare-AI" (ARCH-AI) designation from the American College of Radiology
“The ARCH-AI certification program evaluates whether AI is used in radiology in a structured, safe manner and for the benefit of patients,” says Prof. Clemens Cyran, Executive Senior Physician at the Department of Radiology. “It establishes binding standards for the selection, validation, integration, operation, and monitoring of clinical AI models.” Rigorous, continuous monitoring of the performance of artificial intelligence in clinical use is essential to ensure both patient safety and the responsible use of resources. “The radiological assessment and decision-making by our experts are a central component of this process,” adds Cyran.
Quality Assurance as an Interdisciplinary Task
Comprehensive documentation and compliance with all security and data protection requirements are essential for safe operation. “We continuously and systematically track and evaluate the models’ usage and performance during routine operations. This is best achieved through close collaboration among experts in radiology, medical physics, data science, and IT,” explains Maria Steinberger, Head of Medical Physics at LMU Radiology.
Part of an International Network of Excellence
“To date, it has been primarily U.S. hospitals that have been recognized as ARCH-AI centers, including leading institutions such as the Mayo Clinic, Mass General Brigham (Harvard Medical School), and Yale New Haven Health,” says Prof. Dr. med. Clemens Cyran. “With the certification of the Department of Radiology at the LMU University Hospital Munich, an institution within the European Union is now part of this international network for the first time.” This brings the total number of recognized centers in Europe to just three so far, including two hospitals in Switzerland. The designation underscores the commitment to using AI in radiological diagnostics in accordance with the highest standards of safety, effectiveness, and efficiency.
