Patients from EU countries (statutory health insurance)
The European Commission provides detailed information about your rights in the event of illness on its website. Please be aware of the strict distinction between unplanned (medical emergency) and planned treatment (co-treatment and further treatment of your illness). Therefore, we kindly ask you to provide us with medical information as precise as possible in order to allow for a swifter evaluation of your treatment request.
Planned Treatment:
If you are traveling to LMU Hospital for planned medical treatment, you must obtain approval from your home health insurance fund beforehand. In such a case:
- You will receive the form S2 ("Entitlement to planned treatment in another EU country," formerly E112) from your home health insurance fund for this purpose. The aforementioned document is the sole recognized legal proof of entitlement to planned medical treatment in Germany
- You must then submit the S2 form to the german statutory health insurance fund of your choice and receive a national proof of entitlement from the chosen health insurance provider
- The sole submittal of your electronic health card (European Health Insurance Card - EHIC) on admission is not enough to make you eligible for treatment. Therefore, you must submit the national proof of entitlement on the day of admission. By submitting the proof of entitlement, you will be allowed to receive care within the same treatment and payment framework applied to german nationals.
In accordance with the provisions of the European Social Insurance Agreement, we can only accept German health insurance companies in the federal state of Bavaria. In case you are unable to provide us with a national proof of entitlement from a german statutory health insurance provider, you may nonetheless be admitted as a self-pay patient at our Hospital. Please be aware that in such a case you will not be entitled to reimbursement from the german health insurance of your choice.
The above-mentioned requirements apply to both inpatient and outpatient care.
- You can find a list of german statutory health insurance companies to which you can submit the S2 form here: https://www.krankenkassen.de/gesetzliche-krankenkassen/krankenkassen-liste/
- Further information on the S2 certificate can be found here: https://www.krankenkassen.de/ausland/portable/s2/
Unplanned Treatment:
You will be required to submit your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) prior to receiving unplanned treatment at LMU Hospital.
Please note that your european health insurance card is only intended for use in the event of unforeseen medical care. For instance, if you are on holiday and fall ill or suffer an injury abroad, the EHIC will cover the costs of treatment.
However, you should be aware that the card does not cover treatment costs abroad if you are traveling to receive treatment for an illness or injury that you already had before leaving your country of residence.
