The Outpatient Clinic for Tropical Medicine, Infectiology and Travel Medicine at the Institute of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine (LMU University Hospital Munich) is the only university facility of its kind in Bavaria. Other key areas of the Tropical Institute include studies at the Clinical Trials Unit, laboratory diagnostics in tropical medicine and parasitology, international teaching and further education, and research in the field of infection and tropical medicine.

Surveillance of emerging infections with high transmission potential is also of great importance. For example, the first COVID-19 case in Germany was diagnosed at the Tropical Institute's outpatient clinic.
