Content:
Welcome to the Pandemic Preparedness course, an advanced module designed to strengthen your understanding and skills in responding effectively to pandemics. This course focuses on the principles of infectious disease epidemiology, health policy, surveillance, monitoring, response strategies, and health promotion. Participants will engage in hands-on training, case studies, and field data collection exercises to enhance practical knowledge in pandemic preparedness and management. This program is a collaboration between the Teaching & Training Unit of Center for International Health and Jimma University.
Course Description :
This is an in-person course that integrates theoretical foundations with practical application. Participants will explore key aspects of pandemic preparedness, such as epidemiology, health policy, surveillance systems, response strategies, and diagnostic tools. Case studies and field exercises will provide insights into real-world scenarios, ensuring participants are well-equipped to handle future health crises.
Key Content Areas
Epidemiology and Outbreak Investigations: Understand the principles of infectious disease epidemiology and the critical steps in outbreak investigations. Engage in case studies and practical exercises to develop hands-on expertise in managing real-world scenarios.
Health Policy and Governance: Explore national and supra-national policy frameworks and governance considerations. Learn from examples in selected countries to understand the complexities of policy-making and implementation in health systems.
Surveillance and Monitoring: Gain insights into early warning systems, data reporting, and the role of artificial intelligence in modeling. Master data science techniques and explore effective data sources for robust surveillance.
Response Strategies: Develop skills in coordination, collaboration, and communication during emergencies. Learn about resource allocation, human resource management, and monitoring and evaluation to strengthen response efforts.
Emerging and Re-emerging Pathologies: Study viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic diseases alongside vector biology and epidemiology. Focus on the challenges posed by (re-)emerging pathogens in pandemic contexts.
Health Promotion and Preparedness Toolkit: Delve into community engagement strategies, including information, education, and communication during pandemics. Gain proficiency in diagnostic tools, infection prevention measures, and outbreak response procedures to ensure comprehensive preparedness.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the course, participants will be able to: Apply principles of infectious disease epidemiology in outbreak investigations. Analyze health policy frameworks and governance models for pandemic management and engage communities through health promotion and education. Utilize surveillance systems, data sources, and modeling techniques for effective monitoring. Understand the implementation of response strategies, focusing on coordination, resource management, and evaluation... Operate diagnostic and detection tools for infection prevention and control
