The event began with a warm welcome by Prof. Michael Hoelscher, Director of the Institute of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine, LMU Hospital Munich, who greeted the guests and mentioned that the event marked the celebration of the former department's transition into an independent institute in 2024. He emphasized that it was an honor to host the exhibition, which has been shown at prestigious locations such as the House of Lords, the House of Commons, Westminster Cathedral, and the Blue Peter Health and Research Facility in Hyderabad, India.
Highlights of the symposium included a keynote by Prof. Diana Lockwood (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine), who introduced the New Face for Leprosy Project, and photographer Tom Bradley, who shared insights on documenting the project through his lens. The scientific session featured presentations by leading experts: Prof. August Stich (Würzburg University Hospital, DAHW, German Leprosy and Tuberculosis Relief Association) on the clinical picture and treatment of leprosy, Prof. Gisela Bretzel (LMU Hospital Munich) on laboratory diagnostics, and Dr. Saskia Kreibich (DAHW) on the epidemiology and global impact of leprosy.
During the exhibition opening, Prof. Hoelscher welcomed the guests, followed by an introduction to the topic of leprosy by Prof. Lockwood, a moving testimonial by Evelyne Leandro (author of the book “The Living Death: A Struggle with a Long-Forgotten Disease”), and reflections from photographer Tom Bradley on the artistic vision of the project. The evening concluded with a reception, lively conversations, and group tours of the exhibition.
We extend heartfelt thanks to all supporters, speakers, and guests from DAHW, Lepra UK, ILEP, and Evelyne Leandro for making this event possible.
The exhibition is now on display, and we warmly invite you to visit during the outpatient clinic's opening hours!
