Nuclear medicine therapy
The therapy ward at Großhadern Hospital (ward K0) has 16 beds available for all therapies currently offered with open radionuclides. The ward is equipped with modern 2-bed rooms and two 1-bed rooms. Each room has its own washroom with WC, color TV and telephone connection (for a fee).
For the patient, the rooms in the therapy ward are no different from the usual patient rooms in a hospital. The special measures required to comply with the strict radiation protection regulations are hidden from view. These include separate waste disposal, which is used to collect all excretions, and special structural measures.
The length of stay depends on the amount of activity used and is usually around one week, including preparations. As a rule, however, you only have to spend 2 - 3 days in the patient's room, the rest of the time can be spent on the entire ward, in the lounge or on the ward's own terrace outside.
Most patients are very pleasantly surprised by the entire stay, as the nuclear medicine therapies are generally painless and largely free of side effects. The ban on friends or relatives visiting during the stay is perceived as a disadvantage, but the Radiation Protection Ordinance does not allow otherwise.
What should I bring with me?
For inpatient admission, you will first need a referral slip from your GP or specialist, and the central patient admission department will also need your health insurance card.
We ask you to ensure that we have the most important documents relating to your illnesses (external diagnostics, medication, etc.) at the start of your stay.
Please bring comfortable clothing, washing utensils and materials to pass the time, sufficient for a hospital stay of approx. one week. These items can easily be taken home with you when you are discharged.
In addition to 2 doctors, there are 12 nurses on the ward who will take care of your individual needs and wishes. A physicist is responsible for radiation protection and technical-physical care.
