Schistosomiasis is an acute and chronic parasitic disease caused by blood flukes (trematode worms) of the genus Schistosoma. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), estimates show that at least 251.4 million people required preventive treatment for schistosomiasis in 2021, out of which more than 75.3 million people were reported to have been treated.
On the first day of the Schisto TropNet Platform Meeting in Munich, moderated by Federico Gobbi, experts in schistosomiasis and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) met to discuss topics including Complicated Hepatosplenic Schistosomiasis (Francesca Tamarozzi, Hans Martin Orth) and Diagnostic Tools (Lisette van Lieshout (online), Emmanuel Bottieau, Federico Gobbi, Sabine Jordan).
The second day started with presentations on Delphi questionnaire and National Guidelines (Francesca Tamarozzi, Camilla Rothe, Cristina Bocanegra, Johannes Jochum), Complicated Urogenital Schistosomiasis (Lorenzo Zammarchi, Fernando Salvador), Female Genital Schistosomiasis (Francesca Tamarozzi, Valentina Marchese), and Acute Schistosomiasis (Emmanuel Bottieau, Marta Arsuaga).
Chaired by Camilla Rothe, Consultant in Tropical Medicine and Head of the Outpatient Department of the Munich Tropical Institute, the Platform Meeting was followed by the hybrid (live and online via Zoom) TropNet Clinical Cases Meeting including global case reports by Marta Arzuaga (Madrid): “Time matters”, Johannes Jochum (Hamburg) “The pastor with a very strange case of malaria”, Charlotte Zheng (London): “The tropical perils of military service”, and Leo Visser (Leiden): “A lethal fever from Sierra Leone”.
We warmly thank all participants and discussants for joining us!
