Eligibility Check of your Documents

To enroll in a Ph.D. program at a German university, you have to hold a Master's degree obtained from a recognized higher education institution (HEI) that is equivalent to a German Master's degree.

You can verify the recognition status of the higher education institution (HEI) where you studied and your academic qualifications by using the database of recognized institutions abroad (ANABIN). While the database is in German, you can follow the steps below to access the required information.

HEI recognition

Visit the following website:

  1. Click on 'Suchen' (next to 'Info') to access the search function.
  2. Select your country from the dropdown list labeled 'Länderauswahl öffnen' and confirm by clicking on 'Länderauswahl bestätigen'.
  3. Select your city under 'Alle Orte.'
  4. If there are multiple educational institutions in your city, you can also specify the type under 'Alle Institutionstypen.' (e.g. Universität)
  5. Start the search by clicking the ‘Suche starten’ button, and then locate your university in the results list.

The meaning of the results:

  • If your university is categorized as 'H+', it is recognized in Germany. 
  • If it is listed as 'H+/-,' your specific degree program will require individual evaluation. 
  • If it is marked as 'H-', your degree will not be accepted in Germany as your institution is not approved as a higher education institution. In this case, you do not have a qualifying degree to pursue a Ph.D. with us.

Degree recognition

Visit the following website:

  1. Select 'Suchen nach Abschlüssen' (next to 'Info') to access the search function. 
  2. Select your country where you obtained your degree from the dropdown list labeled 'Länderauswahl öffnen' and confirm by clicking on 'Länderauswahl bestätigen'.
  3. Specify the degree type ('Alle Abschlusstypen') and your field of study ('Alle Studienrichtungen'). 
  4. Start the search by clicking the ‘Suche starten’ button, and then locate your degree in the results list.
  5. Once you have located your degree, click on the plus sign to the left.

A pop-up window will appear, displaying the classification of your degree ('Abschlussklasse'). If it corresponds to at least a 2-year Master's program (A5), you meet the degree requirement for starting your Ph.D. in Germany.
