PhD Program

The PhD program "Oral Sciences" is an academic and educative course for promoting research activities on oral health related issues for young scientists who are planning a career at a university or dental research center. The program itself is a collaboration between the Dental School of the LMU Munich and its departments (Orthodontics, Conservative Dentistry and Periodontology, Prosthodontic Dentistry, and Oral-Maxillo-Facial Surgery and Radiology), and the Munich Medical Research School (MMRS) of the Medical Faculty of the LMU Munich.

For the course starting in October 2025, we are offering two positions for candidates in this PhD program in the fields of Biomechanics and Mechanobiology, respectively. Applications can be submitted via the Online Application Portal starting in November this year. The Biomechanics Laboratory is headed by Prof. Dr. Andrea Wichelhaus. The main research topics are: dental biomechanics, finite element analysis, programming (APDL, LabView, etc.), bone remodeling simulation, basic material research, and the development of new orthodontic appliances

The Mechanobiology & Genetics Laboratory is headed by Prof. Dr. Andrea Wichelhaus and Assoc. Prof. (Priv.-Doz.) Dr. Uwe Baumert. Main research topics are: mechanotransduction in orthodontic tooth movement, bone remodelling, genetics of bone remodelling, and craniofacial genetics.
