i-Target 2.0 at the Harvard Immunology Retreat 2024: Boston and Loon Mountain
Attending the Harvard Immunology Retreat thanks to i-Target 2.0 Retreat was an inspiring and memorable experience, filled with thought-provoking talks, meaningful connections and scenic adventures.
Our journey began at Munich airport where Linda, Mila, Sandra, and I met before our flight after receiving the information that we would have an unexpectedly long trip, being rerouted via Washington, D.C. Stefanos, who arrived a day prior had been deviated via New York. We arrived safely but quite tired and were already thrilled to finally start the weekend in Boston, ready for an exciting retreat.
The first full day was spent strolling through and exploring Boston. We enjoyed its unique charm as well as its famous Fall foliage, making time to try some delicious bagels and coffee which quickly became a group favorite. The casual day of exploration set the perfect tone before the retreat’s academic program began.
The next morning Stefan and Luana (presently doing an internship at the Boston Children’s Hospital) joined us as we began our trip from Boston to Loon Mountain in New Hampshire. During the bus ride, he pointed out significant buildings and shared interesting facts about the area, giving us a greater appreciation for the journey. The drive itself was beautiful, with the scenery becoming more breathtaking as we approached the mountains.
The retreat began with a series of engaging talks by PIs and doctoral students, which provided fresh perspectives and sparked dynamic discussions. That evening the poster presentations allowed participants to showcase their work and exchange ideas in an interactive and supportive environment.
A highlight of the weekend was a group hike up Loon Mountain. Encouraged by the German hiking enthusiasm, the Munich team ventured up the trail together. The view from the summit was spectacular making every step, despite the chilly temperatures and steep climb, worthwhile. The next day brought more inspiring sessions, including a standout talk by guest speaker Crystal Mackall. Her presentation was both insightful and motivating, leaving a strong impression on all of us.
On Sunday we returned to sunny Boston and took the afternoon to explore more of the city. We crossed the Charles River into Cambridge, where we walked through the iconic Harvard campus, reflecting on the exciting weekend. The combination of academic inspiration and touristic exploration made for a perfect end to the retreat.
As we headed back to the airport to return to Munich, we were filled with new ideas and insights as well as lasting memories from an unforgettable experience. The retreat was not only an opportunity for academic growth but also a chance to connect with colleagues and appreciate the stunning beauty of New England.
We would like to thank i-Target 2.0 as well as the kind donors to the program for making this experience possible.
Yours sincerely,
Gordon, Mila, Sandra, Linda, Luana and Stefanos
